Competency Framework

Behavioural competencies are the skills and abilities that contribute to a person’s success in the organisation (e.g., teamwork, communication, people skills, problem solving). They are specific to a person rather than to a job, because they are a mixture of their behaviour, attitude and action.
By having a competency framework for each role in your business, it defines the behaviours the organisation is looking for to achieve its objectives. It’s a standard of performance that's clear and accessible to everyone in the company.
To make sure a framework is useful, it can’t be too broad (e.g. general statements about individual competencies) or it will not give adequate guidance to managers and staff as to what is expected of them and how they will be measured. If it is too detailed, the process may be excessively bureaucratic and time-consuming and may lose credibility.
Creating a competency framework is easy. Start by forming a competency framework team with selected people from each area of your business that will use the framework.
Examples of competencies in a framework are:
• Communication skills
• People management
• Team skills
• Customer service skills
• Results-orientation
• Problem-solving.
Firms use competency frameworks to help improve the following:
• Employee reviews/appraisal
• Employee effectiveness
• Organisational effectiveness
• Analysis of training needs
• Career management.
